Conference Recap!

Conference is just for YOU!
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This past weekend was General Conference for The LDS Church. I want to make this short because conference is already an 10-12 hour commitment of listening to the voice of the Lord, and I know how exhausting it can be to take it all in. So today I am simply going to share a link to the conference talk summaries (which will have a link to the whole talk as well), and also I will share my testimony.

Conference was truly amazing. As I write this, it is in between the morning and afternoon of Sunday Sessions, but I know that the last and final session will be just as uplifting and inspiring. I have learned so much and I cannot wait to make the needed changes in my life to be a better disciple of Christ. This semi-annual conference held a lot of meaning for the Women of the church as 2 talks were specifically for them, and a lot of other talks mentioned them more than once. There was also a lot about discipleship and how to draw nearer to the Savior and His teachings. We were instructed about keeping the Sabbath Day holy and how important the Sacrament is each week. We must strive to make and keep and renew our covenants with God. We were encouraged to strive to let the Light Of Christ shine through our actions, words, and deeds. We need to set the example in an ever diminishing world. I know that we have a true and living Prophet, Prophet Thomas S. Monson living on the earth today. He holds all the keys of this dispensation and leads and guides the Lord's church today. I know that the apostles called and sustained are chosen by God. God is the head of this church. He lives and He still speaks to us today. He loves us. We need to heed His words given through our prophets and apostles today. This weekend is our most recent scripture given by God and we need to treat as so. The words spoken are true, I have prayed and found that for myself, and we need to follow the council given. I urge you to do what you can to make the needed changes in your life to be a better disciple of Christ. Seek the Savior's divine help and He will never let you down. Make your way His way and you will be eternally blessed. Of this I testify, In the holy sacred name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen

Love,
Samantha

100 Years Later & Family Is Still Important!

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Elder Quentin L. Cook (from the Quorum of the 12 Apostles) stated: "How we preserve time for family is one of the most significant issues of our time." Which leads me to my topic for the day: Family Home Evening! The reason I chose to talk about this topic is because 100 years ago President Joseph F. Smith (6th President of The LDS Church) stated: “We advise and urge the inauguration of a ‘Home Evening’ throughout the church, at which time fathers and mothers may gather their boys and girls about them in the home and teach them the word of the Lord. …

“This ‘Home Evening’ should be devoted to prayer, singing hymns, songs, instrumental music, scripture-reading, family topics and specific instruction on the principles of the gospel, and on the ethical problems of life, as well as the duties and obligations of children to parents, the home, the Church, society and the nation. For the smaller children appropriate recitations, songs, stories and games may be introduced. Light refreshments of such a nature as may be largely prepared in the home might be served."

Family is central to The Lord's plan for us- no wonder He asks us to gather weekly as families to council together, learn, grow, share experiences, study His divine word, laugh, and make precious memories. It makes sense: if you are to spend eternity with these people we call our family, don't you want to have a strong desire to serve them and love them like The Savior would? That is what Family Home Evening is all about.

Family home evening has blessed my life and the life of many families around the world. Family home evening is exactly that: a night with you family! Yes, it is not always easy, but anything we don't have to make a sacrifice for isn't worth much to us. I was once told by a close friend: "We sacrifice things for what we love and we love what we sacrifice things for." If we are sacrificing "our" time for our families and for God: we will learn to love each other and our Heavenly Father more deeply and unconditionally.

In closing I want to share with you two pages that might help you and your families with family home evening ideas!
100 years of Family Home Evening
Family Home Evening

I just want to testify to you that I know that taking time for our families is such a blessing and strength. This program to spend time with our families is truly Heaven sent. Even though some nights it will end in discouragement and despair I plead with you to never give up. Always keep trying. The lessons you are teaching, the activities you are having, the scriptures you are reading: they are changing your children's lives. You are learning and drawing closer to the Savior together. "A family that prays together, stays together." By gathering weekly for personal family time, you are truly testifying to the Lord that you want to stay together with you family. Pray together daily as this helps you stay even stronger. Heavenly Father is pleased with you and your efforts to follow His prophets council. I know that this is true,
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen

Coming Up!

"The greatest blessings come after the Conference is over. We gather to hear the voice of The Lord, then return to our homes to live them." -Elder Robert D. Hales
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This week I would like to share some things that are coming up that are very important in my life- and how we can prepare for such things.

First- this is mostly an update for those who don't know yet: I will be having my final interview for my mission papers this Tuesday so I will be submitting my papers on WEDNESDAY!!! I am so excited! (Please pray all goes well and that I will really be able to submit them this time! Thank you!)

2. This is what I would like to share about today! LDS General Conference is coming up!! Oh boy am I excited or what?! I've even requested the weekend off of work! It's gonna be AMAZING!

For those of you who don't know: General Conference is a "series" of special meetings for the LDS members where we gather -every 6 months- to hear the voice of The Lord through His chosen Prophet and Apostles. It is held in SLC Utah and broadcast throughout the world via satellite. There are 4 two hour meetings open to everyone of all ages, then there is a Women's meeting and a Priesthood meeting. (Both men's and women's sessions are available to hear by anyone after the conference via lds.org) If anyone would like more information on these conferences and how to participate in your own home or with family and friends, click here

I would like to remind you about how important, not only the actual conference is, but the preparation, and action after are as well. Let's start with these videos:
Find Answers To Questions
Seek Receive Act

I want you now to think of some questions you have for The Lord. Think about you life- what have you been struggling with? What has been on your mind a lot recently? What would you have Heavenly Father tell you right now? I want to invite you to start praying about these questions and inquiries. Ask Heavenly Father to help you hear His words for you so that you may change as He needs you too. Here is the key though: you must listen with sincere intent and a desire to learn as the Apostles of The Lord speak to us in the coming weeks. Then you must ACT! There is no good in hearing His divine word and His divine direction for you if you are not willing to act on His council. No- it may not be easy: but it will be worth it.

To close, watch this video about how Ryan changed His life after Conference. Revelation
Sometimes it may just be the small simple things you need to fix- with dedication you will change and Heavenly Father will use you as His instrument to do His divine work. You will come closer to Him and His Son, and you will be happier. So: What will you do with Conference?

I testify that we have living a living Prophet- Thomas S. Monson, on the earth today. I testify that we have living apostles on the earth today. God has not stopped talking to us. We are literally His children- He loves us. Why would He leave us here on earth without a means of speaking to us? I know that He speaks to us still. Will you be listening??
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen

Little Life Lessons From On High

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Lately I have been learning a lot about what it is going to take to be a full time missionary for The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. As I have been doing this Heavenly Father is teaching me simple- yet very important and profound lessons that will help me not only on my mission preparation, and service: but also in my life. My message this week is about one of those lessons.

Completing mission papers- for any prospective missionary, can be quite a hassle, even without unforeseen problems. I didn't expect to have problems with my papers, as I know that I am quite healthy and ready for a mission. However- I have seen some delays, and boy were those delays faith testing for me. I can truly testify from recent experiences that The Lord truly does have a plan for each of us and His timing is certainly not our timing- but His is perfect and we have to trust Him.

So- my experience is as follows:
I finished my portion of the mission papers, had my meeting with my bishop and walked away with some new information about the whole mission papers process that sort of put a kink in my time line. You see, in my interview I was told that prospective missionaries are being asked to have an evaluation with a therapist to determine if you have any problems with depression, anxiety, etc. (Things that would keep you from being successful in the mission field.) At first I thought: "Okay no big deal, I'll get my appointment with LDS family services tomorrow and have my evaluation later in the week. We will be only be a few days delayed if at all. It's okay. No biggie."
Well, the next day I called and got my appointment: except for apparently it's almost impossible to get an appointment any sooner than a month out. I got lucky and only had to wait 2 weeks. But still that put me behind schedule: so instant bad attitude about the whole thing.

Along comes my appointment, everything goes fantastic! I'm feeling great, the therapist I met with even told me that there were no problems and that we wouldn't need further meetings: I was clear to go! I was on cloud nine. Finally! I could submit my papers! It was only Thursday, so the guy could write my evaluation that night or Friday morning and send them to my bishop and then I could have my last interviews Sunday or Tuesday. Great! Well, that's not what happened. Come to find out: it takes 1 to 2 weeks for them to write your evaluation and send it to the proper people. Are you kidding me?! I had a time line people. Work with me! So I started praying even harder that my evaluation would hurry and get written up and sent to my bishop so that I could submit and find out where I was going on my mission because I wanted to know right now!

Well the days start ticking by, and I'm just waiting around being concerned about only "my" timeline. (Very selfish I know..) Then on Thursday- one week after my evaluation, I was sitting in my institute classes. I had just had a conversation with my best friend the night before about how frustrated I was and how I "knew I had to be patient because obviously the Lord was trying to 'teach me a lesson'". Then in all 3 of my classes guess what the subject was? Yup you're right! It's all about being patient. From Mission Prep class: "Patience is a manifestation of our faith and trust in God."
From Foundations Of The Restoration class: "Don't run faster than you have strength just because it's a good cause."
From Book Of Mormon class: "Press forward with Faith" and "Don't be distracted or deceived."

Finally leaving my last class- I had a pit in my stomach. "Okay I get it Heavenly Father.. I need to really be patient, and not just say 'I'm being patient.' I understand those are two separate things." Getting in the car to go home, I pondered class and what my next step of action would be. I went to the temple with my best friend that night and continued to ponder. Upon arriving home, I knew what I needed to do. I needed to seek my Father's forgiveness and His divine help in prayer. So to my room I went. I apologized and acknowledged that the "flesh is weak, but the spirit is willing." I asked Heavenly Father to help me be patient, and for the first time I honestly told my Father in Heaven that I knew my timeline was not perfect and I knew that His was- and if I was to wait longer than I had hoped to receive my mission call: that if that was His timing I was okay with it. That I'd refocus on preparing to go on my mission the best I could and that I would wait until He knew I was ready.

The next afternoon I was sitting watching a movie with my mom while we had lunch. I got a phone call from a number I didn't recognize and guess who it was?! It was the therapist telling me my papers had been sent to the proper people and that the next step was my last interview! Humbled and overjoyed I told my mom the good news. Then excusing myself to my room I prayed with great joy a prayer of thanks. When The Lord had seen that I had truly submitted my will to His, He was willing to give me what it was that I had been praying so hard for.

To wrap up, I want to share with you this video: Continue In Patience

I just want to end saying: although all our prayers might not be answered as quickly as we had hoped, even after we submit our will to His, I know that the Lord's timing is perfect. I know that He will bless us with what we desire (as long as that desire is what He sees best for us) in HIS time. Not ours. I know that if we render patience we will be blessed. I know that no matter where I serve my mission for The Church it will be the best mission for me. It will be where I am needed. It will be the best thing I've ever done and I know that I will love the people I am called to serve. I am so thankful for this opportunity to serve my Father and my Elder Brother. I am so eternally thankful for the gospel and I testify of its truthfulness:
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen

The "Trade Mark" of The Lord's Love

Tender mercies are real- how do you recognize them?
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

What is a trade mark? The dictionary says:
"a distinctive mark or figure of or identified with a person or thing. synonyms: logo, brand, emblem, sign, mark, stamp, symbol, badge, crest"
So let's take the synonyms "sign, mark, emblem, symbol" and ask our selves: "What is the trade mark (or symbol/sign/mark/emblem) of The Lord's love for us? Here is my story:

This week I was sitting in one of my Book Of Mormon institute classes and we came across a verse in 1 Nephi Chapter 1 Verse 20. It reads: (with emphasis added) "...But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance."

Brother and Sisters: the "trade mark" of The Lord's love for each of us are the Tender Mercies He showers upon us according to our obedience.

Elder David A. Bednar from the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explains tender mercies in this video: The Tender Mercies of The Lord

I just want to testify that The Tender Mercies of the Lord are real. They are usually very simple and sweet ways of Heavenly Father telling us that He is still there- and He is watching out for us and He loves us deeply. I testify we are not alone and we are not forgotten. He is with us. What are you doing to show Him you are thankful for His love through His Tender Mercies? Write them down, hold them dear, and be someone's tender mercy today. Smile, be kinder, and let Heavenly Father use you to be a tender mercy in the life of His children. I know this is true. Remember: sometimes our tender mercies come as blessing in raindrops, healing through tears, and a thousand sleepless nights is what it could take to know He is near. Trials in this life are our mercies in disguise. What are you doing to seek them and hold them dear? Open your eyes and heart to His love, He won't stand in front of you yelling and flashing signs for your attention. They will come as simple, small, quiet acts of love. Don't take them for granted. They will get you through some of the hardest times. He loves you more than you know. Of this I testify,
In our Savior's Holy name,
Amen

Love,
Samantha

The People Shall Flow Unto The Temple

"Flow unto the temple"

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today I want to share with you a message about something that is becoming more and more dear to my heart. I want to share with you, as the title states, about temples!

As those of you who diligently read my blog know, I am planning on serving an LDS full time mission! In way of preparing for that special event in my life, I have been taking five gospel classes (institute classes) to help me be ready to teach the gospel. When you go on an LDS mission, you first have to go to an LDS temple, of your choosing, and do something called endowments. (I would explain what this is- but I'm not quite sure how as I have not done this yet in my life. All I know is that it is a very special and beautiful experience where you get to make special promises with Heavenly Father.) In way of preparing for this very exciting and sacred experience I have decided that I am going to attend an LDS temple at least once a week to do baptisms for the dead! I want to do this so that when it is time for me to attend the temple for my endowments, Heavenly Father knows I love His house and I want to be like Him. As those of you know- this is no easy task. Satan doesn't want you to attend the temple because when you go to the temple, you are more in tune with the Spirit and it makes it harder for him to tempt you. He will do everything he can to make it seem like going to the temple isn't important or you're too busy. But this is the plan I have chosen! I am going at least once a week no matter what! So here's my story:

This week I wanted to attend the temple earlier in the week because I was going out of town on the weekend. I decided the best time to go would be at 5:30 am when the temple opens. I tired three times to go, all attempts resulting in "failure." I would wake up feeling sick or too tired, so I stayed home. Friday (the day I was leaving) came around, and again I didn't get to the temple at 5:30 am. When I got up at 8 am, I felt it was okay if I didn't go- I was going out of town and had a lot to get done before I left. "Heavenly Father will understand." I thought to myself. Then as I prayed that morning I felt I had to be at the temple that morning. "I made choices that are based on me living at home so I could be closer to the temple. If I start missing a week of temple attendance now it's going to be easier to skip out later. I have to go." I told myself. Quickly I got my Sunday best on and went up to ask my mom to drive me to the temple. Graciously my sweet mom said she would take me to the temple.

As my mom dropped me off and I walked in the doors of the temple I felt relief pour over me. All my worries and fears were left at the door and I was now in the Lord's holy house. I was in a safe place. A place of love, peace, answers, and spiritual power. I was at home with my Father in Heaven. As I went through the process of doing baptisms for the dead I was reminded of the power of the temple. The peace that is felt there and the closeness you can feel to our Heavenly Father there.

When I came out of the temple I found I had some time to walk the grounds and reflect upon the beauty of the temple and my Heavenly Father's plan for me. I didn't really have a question in my mind that I was searching to find answers for, but I did have a lot on my mind concerning preparation for a mission and how I was going to do everything I'd be asked to do. As I walked around the temple I found myself sitting on the benches behind the temple in a garden area. I found myself alone so I decided to pray. I talked with my Father in Heaven like He was sitting by my side, because I knew He was. I knew He was listening. I talked with Him about my life- my plan- and of course: the mission. I told Him my concerns and I told Him my desires to serve Him. I asked for His divine help.
Suddenly I remembered a hymn that was life changing for me. (I'll go where you want me to go Hymn no. 270) As I pondered I sang this hymn to myself in the beauty of the temple gardens- remembering the significance of this hymn in my life.

As I finished up I heard some people coming so I decided to leave the gardens and finish my walk around the temple. As I came around to the front of the temple I saw a line of cars and people walking to the temple. This made me feel joy inside. Suddenly I recalled a scripture from years ago in seminary. It is found in Micah chapter 4 verses 1&2 and it reads:
"But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.
And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem."

I was overcome with confirmation that being at the temple at that time was the right thing. Making the choices I have made, to be where I am and to be preparing for a mission right now is what I need to be doing. I needed to do the work I was doing inside the walls of the temple. Heavenly Father could see that I would also need extra strength to resist temptations- extra strength I would receive only by going to the temple that morning.

These days truly are the "last days" that the scriptures refer too. People truly are flowing to the Mountain of The Lord. (The Temple) And the time for me to be going on a mission and proclaiming His word is now. The word of the Lord truly is going out to all the nations.

Brothers and Sisters the time is now. I have found this for myself. We cannot wait till tomorrow to prepare to meet God. Today is the day. Today is the day to go to the temple. Today is the day to teach His word and do His work. We cannot keep saying: "I'll do that tomorrow." For that is exactly what Satan wants us to do. He wants us to think it's not possible right now, or it's too hard. Well Brothers and Sisters I am here to tell you sometimes it will be hard. But Christ died for you so that you may live for all eternity with Him in the Kingdom of Heaven. It was excruciatingly hard- but because He loves you with an unconditional love: He did it. What are you doing to repay that price- no matter how hard it may be?

I want to share in closing this video: Temples Are a Beacon

This man worked and paid all he had to take his family to the temple. He knew the price and he was willing to work all he could give so he could be with his family forever- so he could be in the Lord's house: the holy temple. Brothers and Sisters I ask you: what price are you paying to go to the temple?

If you live in Utah like me- you have no excuse at all. You could go to multiple temples within a matter of a few minutes. You have no excuse not to be attending the temple at least once a month. If you do not currently hold a temple recommend, or you are not worthy to enter the temple at this present time: please do everything you can to get that worthy temple recommend and get to the temple. As for now however- go to the temple grounds. Feel the love and peace there. It is a dedicated place of worship. Spend some time walking the grounds and pondering. I have had times in my life where this was all I could do too- and it changed my life. Some of my most crucial times of decision were made in times I went to the temple grounds to ponder. If you aren't old enough to go inside, or you have to wait for other personal reasons: go to the temple grounds and ponder. Prepare now to go inside someday. That someday will be here faster than you know. Heavenly Father will see your righteous desires and He will bless you immensely for this. I testify that if we will MAKE the time to be in the Lord's house doing His work we will be blessed in ways we cannot even imagine. I testify of the peace and love that is felt inside the walls of the temple. I testify that temples are truly His house. That they are truly beacons of light and hope and nations are truly flowing unto the temple. I know without a shadow of a doubt that this true. I beg you to attend the temple. Alone or with family and friends. I know this is true. I know the power of the temple is real. I have seen it change lives and I see it changing mine. Go to the temple, not once- but as much as you possibly can. I know you will be blessed. This I leave with you in the humble name of our Savior and Redeeming Lord- Even Jesus Christ, Amen

Love,
Samantha

What Are You Striving For?

You can strive today!
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today I feel strongly the power that comes with never giving up hope. Hope that comes from knowing Christ and believing in Him and His sacrifice for us; that through Him we can be made whole again. That by Him we can come back home and be welcomed with loving arms. I know that so many of us have felt lost in our lives, but because of Him we are never completely lost- there is always hope and always love for us. That because of Him we can always be better, we can keep trying, we can keep working. We aren't meant to be perfect, but to be perfected in Him. Because of Him, every day we can try a little harder to be a little better.

Because of that- I want to share this: STRIVE

I just want to challenge each of you reading this to strive today to become more like The Savior. Listen to the video again and find something that sticks out to you, and apply it now. For me it was when it says: "To strengthen our relationship with God we need some meaningful time alone with Him." I want to consciously make the effort to spend time alone- away from distractions of the world- with my loving Father In Heaven.
There are so many things in this video that every day we can choose to work on.
"All the little things make up the big things."
"Rise from mediocrity to competence, from failure to achievement. Be your best self."
"Be strong, live the gospel faithfully- even if others around you don't live it at all."
"Defend your beliefs with courtesy and compassion, but defend them!"
"Rise above rationalizations and distractions."
"Do not drift off course, not even a few degrees."
"Hearken to The Lord your God."
"It is never too late to strengthen the foundation of your faith. There is always time."
"Bear in mind that people can change!"
"Find happiness in ordinary things and keep your sense of humor."
"There is no tomorrow to remember if we don't do something today. To live most fully today we must do that which is of greatest importance."
"Each of us has a part to play in the plan and each of us is equally valued."
"We are not and need never be alone. We can press forward in our daily lives with Heavenly help."
"Through the Savior's Atonement we can receive capacity and strength beyond our own."
"We never need feel alone or unloved in the Lord's service because we never are."
"Strive to be that kind of disciple of The Father and The Son and your influence will never fade."
"Always remember: YOU MATTER TO HIM."
"Never give up."
I know this is true and He loves you. You can do this with His help. Be like Him. Strive today to be more like Him. What are you going to do?

In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen

Love,
Samantha
